Disney's Hercules Reboot Will Spawn 'A Decade' of Stories | CBR

Disney's live-action remake of Hercules is moving along, as producer Joe Russo confirmed that the script was nearly finished and the movie will kickstart a potential franchise.

Speaking to the Lights Camera Barstool podcast, Russo offered an update on the project, which he is producing with his brother, Anthony. "It is still in development, the script is about to come in a week. We’ve taken a lot of time and care with it,” Joe Russo said.

Russo then went on to tease that, much like with the MCU, Disney hopes to build a franchise out of Hercules. “They want to see something really cool that they wanna get lost in it for a decade, so that’s our mission is to provide them with that experience," Russo continued.

The latest in a long series of live-action (or live-action/CGI hybrid) remakes of popular Disney films, the new take on Hercules was announced last year. The Russo Brothers quickly boarded as producers, marking their first project with Disney since Avengers: Endgame. The script is being written by Dave Callaham, who penned Wonder Woman 1984 and is working on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for Marvel Studios.

"I think you always have to bring something new to the table because from our perspective as storytellers, it's not compelling for us to do a literal translation," Anthony Russo said of the project last year. "We've already done that with our Marvel films. We don't do literal translations of the comics because we feel like if you want that story you can go read that story. We're going to give you a different story."

In that same interview, Anthony said music will play a role in the film, though he neglected to confirm if it will be a musical or feature songs from the original Disney movie.

Released in 1997, the original Hercules was an animated retelling of the demigod's story, combining elements from Greek and Roman mythology with musical numbers. A critical and commercial hit, the remake's announcement garnered plenty of attention from fans. Twitter quickly began fan-casting the five Muses in the film once the news broke, but no official casting announcements have been made at this point. The project also currently lacks a director and release date.
