Star Wars: Finn's Story Deserves A Disney+ Spin-Off | CBR

It's no secret that John Boyega's role as Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy has left some fans wanting more. When The Force Awakens released, Finn's character seemed primed for a grand destiny alongside Daisy Ridley's Rey. However, by the end of the trilogy, he seemed relegated to a joke character whose future was sidelined and never fully explored. Some characters have their entire history chronicled, and Finn deserves that treatment as well.

When Finn's character was initially introduced, there was a lot of speculation over his fate. The idea of an ex-Stormtrooper wielding a lightsaber served to excite as something like this had never been done before. All points led to him joining forces with Rey as a fellow Jedi ready to take on Kylo Ren and the First Order. It was an idea that still entices fans. Unfortunately, enthusiasm was replaced with frustration when the character never became the hero fans had hoped he would one day be.

Ever since the release of The Rise of Skywalker, more information has begun to come to light regards to mysteries that were left unexplored in the film, like Finn's Force sensitivity. A lot of this was due in part to John Boyega's transparency with his experiences and feelings. His frustrations alone are more than enough of a reason to cover the untold stories of Finn, and there is a perfect starting point between Episodes VIII and IX.

At the start of the last film, a more confident Finn is shown running missions with Poe for the Resistance. However, fans have no idea what kind of dangers or surprises they encountered that show Finn's growth and the beginnings of his Force sensitivity. Covering these adventures with a comic series or show would be a great way to follow up on Finn's story. It would also help build the lore of a galaxy at war yet again.

Before Disney made the Expanded Universe "Legends," writers would take their ideas and continuations and create stories for characters they wanted to see more. Now, with multiple forms of Star Wars media considered canon, it should be much easier to explore characters in meaningful ways without wondering if it's canon or not. Following Finn's story after Episode IX would be the first time since The Force Awakens that creators would move the timeline forward rather than back.

However, with Finn being Force-sensitive, a tease like that deserves the attention that a TV show or comic could bring. Not only for the possibility to see how Rey is handling life as a Jedi, but also to finally see the Jedi duo teased in Episode VII. As the canon expands, it has become easy to tell stories thanks to platforms like Disney+. Finn is the key to continuing Star Wars' growth. With so many talented writers on board, his story's continuation would offer up opportunities for even more spin-offs.

Modern Star Wars media has shown that great character can come from unlikely places. It is a shame that Finn has become so underutilized and risks obscurity. Finn deserves a solid follow-up and Disney has the best platforms to breathe new life into the character. By doing so, the company would further push the boundaries of Star Wars lore, representation and overall storytelling to new and exciting heights.
