The Champions Just Learned a CRUCIAL Lesson from the X-Men | CBR

WARNING: Spoilers follow for Champions #4 by Eve L. Ewing, Bob Quinn, Federico Blee & VC's Clayton Cowles.

The Champions have been running from C.R.A.D.L.E. since Kamala's Law took effect, and they were trapped and on the verge of being captured when Cyclops showed up. He told C.R.A.D.L.E. agents that the nation of Krakoa was offering the young heroes refuge on their island.

This was enough to turn back C.R.A.D.L.E., who didn't want a diplomatic incident, and Cyclops called on Pixie to teleport the Champions away. However, it turned out that Cyclops wasn't being entirely truthful. Krakoa was not taking them in, but he had other plans for the young heroes.

Cyclops revealed to the kids that Viv Vision betrayed them and gave their location to C.R.A.D.L.E., no matter where they ran. However, he had a plan to get them to safety and out of C.R.A.D.L.E.'s jurisdiction. He took them to join up with one of Krakoa's teams of heroes, The Mauraders. Cyclops took them aboard the ship with Kate Pryde, Storm, Iceman, Pyro, and Bishop. After a good night's sleep and some real food for a change, everyone felt refreshed except for Ms. Marvel, who still can't decide if what they are doing is right.

The Marauders then received a distress call and rushed into battle with the Champions to defend a ship under attack. It turns out that the Atlantean warlord Attuma attacked the ship, claiming it had infringed on his people's territory. The Marauders fought Attuma while the Champions rescued the crew. It turns out that the ship was doing seismic surveys, which sent a lot of disruptive energy to Attuma's land, explaining his anger and the attack.

Storm convinced Attuma to relent on his attack with the assurance that his grievance would be dealt with. That prompted Ms. Marvel to ask the Marauders how they know which side they should be fighting on. The team admitted that they don't always know which side is right and which is wrong. The Marauders make their best guess and hope they are right. This made Ms. Marvel look differently at what was happening in their lives and what the Champions needed to do about it.

Ms. Marvel learned that the Marauders chose one side in a battle and hoped they were helping the right people. That is what the government has done with C.R.A.D.L.E., knowing they need to protect young heroes who can't control their powers. The Champions broke the law by dismissing Kamala's Law, and whether the law was right or wrong, it was still the law. They have to stand up and face the consequences of their actions.

Viv Vision, who no one knew survived the incident, also learned the lesson that not all laws are just, and sometimes people need to stand up to those laws in order for them to be changed. With Viv heading back to meet her teammates and the Champions headed back to face the music for what they have done, it looks like it is time for Marvel's youngest heroes to stand up to the politicians who passed the laws and try to work at changing them in the right way.
