5 Anime Characters Who Would Survive Inside Sword Art Online (& 5 Who Wouldn't)

Sword Art Online is a slight variation of the isekai genre, depicting high-tech MMO games where players can put on a helmet and totally immerse themselves into digital game worlds. This sounds like a lot of fun, but the problem is that the game's creator rigged it to become a deadly contest. Death in the game means death in real life, too.

The game world of Aincrad was split into 100 floors, each of them packed with dungeons, fancy loot, and more than a few enemies and boss battles. Kirito, the hero, survived along with his friend Asuna Yuuki, but what if characters from other anime series ended up in this game world? Could they beat the game, or would they end up as another virtual fatality?

10 WOULD SURVIVE AINCRAD: Bruno Bucciarati, The Squad Leader (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

What does it take to survive a deadly MMO like this one? It helps if a player is not only skilled but also smart and cautious since there are no respawns here. Reckless or shortsighted players will die off quickly, while Bruno Bucciarati can use his good instincts and street smarts to clear all 100 levels.

Bruno Bucciarati is a powerful Strand user and Italian mobster in his own universe, and if he ended up in Aincrad, he would use his leadership skills to form a guild and run it like a well-oiled machine. He knows when to take risks, when to back off, and when to sniff out a trap and avoid it. He'll survive for sure.

9 WOULDN'T SURVIVE AINCRAD: Natsu Dragneel, Who Always Dives Right Into Danger (Fairy Tail)

By contrast, Natsu Dragneel the Fire Dragon Slayer is a hotheaded fellow who is quick to anger and quick to act. In his own universe, Natsu is a powerful wizard who can count on his allies to help him survive a tough fight, including the other Dragon Slayers. But Aincrad is a different story.

If none of Natsu's guildmates are here with him, then he'll lose that vital power of friendship. What is more, Natsu is reckless and will take on any challenge, including floor bosses. He'll definitely end up picking a fight he can't win before reaching the 100th floor.

8 WOULD SURVIVE AINCRAD: Ichigo Kurosaki, The Everyday Hero (Bleach)

Ichigo Kurosaki, a powerful substitute Soul Reaper, is somewhat similar to both Bucciarati and Natsu, in that he has street smarts but is also quick to anger and will jump into danger to defend his friends. Fortunately, he tends to get away with his reckless streak.

Ichigo might have some close calls while grinding levels in Aincrad, but he can pull it off, and he is a sharp nose for gauging his enemy's strength and intent. Ichigo is also a sword specialist, so the sword-only combat system of this game is perfect for him.

7 WOULDN'T SURVIVE AINCRAD: Inosuke Hashibira, Who Will Fight Anything (Demon Slayer)

For the most part, the factor that determines a player's survival is not their sheer strength or skill, but their level of caution. In this game, there are no do-overs, and this is no time to gamble with a player's HP or critical hit chances against a formidable boss. Each battle should have a clear route to victory with minimal risk.

Unfortunately, Inosuke Hashibira is in Natsu's category: reckless, quick to anger, and willing to fight a foe much larger than him. Inosuke has zero restraint and few self-preservation instincts, and he'd probably get himself killed before even reaching floor ten. Even in a hopeless battle, no one could talk him out of a fight. He must see it through to the end, even if he dies.

6 WOULD SURVIVE AINCRAD: Captain Levi Ackerman, The Scout Powerhouse (Attack On Titan)

It takes some serious skills, sharp tactics, and a dash of luck to survive so many battles with the fearsome Titans, and Captain Levi Ackerman has what it takes. He is a strict and forceful leader, and he knows when to push his luck and when to cut his losses.

That is vital not only for surviving the world of Titans but also for surviving Aincrad's digital battlefields. Levi could easily get used to the sword-based combat system, lead a team effectively, and manage his team in the face of imminent death. He may lose some people, but he can accept that. He's going to beat this game, no matter what.

5 WOULDN'T SURVIVE AINCRAD: Darkness, The Punching-Bag Crusader (Konosuba)

At first, it may seem that the crusader known as Darkness is well-equipped to make it through Aincrad. Darkness takes her duty seriously and is clad in high-quality armor, and she's got a sword, too. But it should also be noted that Darkness belongs to the goofiest adventuring gang ever formed.

Darkness is a complete masochist, taking pleasure in monsters and people beating her up and trampling her underfoot, and she will sabotage an entire mission for the sake of this pleasure. She's also terrible with the sword, being unable to hit even an easy target. She's going down.

4 WOULD SURVIVE AINCRAD: Kakashi Hatake, The Copycat Ninja (Naruto)

Kakashi Hatake is far more powerful than his carefree personality and fondness for X-rated novels would suggest. He is among the Leaf Village's most elite ninja, a jonin who has the power of the Sharingan Eye and a great deal of experience. Kakashi also has some leadership skills.

All this would take Kakashi quite far in the world of Aincrad, and it's 100% feasible for Kakashi to get used to a sword-only method of fighting and clear one floor after another. He's got good instincts, a sharp tactical mind, and squad-based leadership skills that will see him through any tight spot.

3 WOULDN'T SURVIVE AINCRAD: Ban, The Fox Sin Of Greed (The Seven Deadly Sins)

Ban is the fox sin of greed, and he is primarily a reckless martial artist who relies greatly on his powers of regeneration to outlast his foes. Ban isn't just tough; he drank from the fountain of immortality, and cannot die from old age, bodily harm, or anything else.

This incredible trait won't carry over into Aincrad, though, since no player can use cheat codes to become invincible. Ban is too used to his fighting style, and he won't have time to adjust before he takes reckless risks in the game and gets himself killed.

2 WOULD SURVIVE AINCRAD: Major-General Olivier Armstrong, Who Believes In Survival Of The Fittest (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Olivier Armstrong is the boss of Fort Briggs, and she proves her worthiness of that position every single day. She is a Major-General, but by no means is Olivier an armchair general; in fact, she won't ask her men to take any risk that she wouldn't take herself. She's the type to lead by example.

Major-General Armstrong has it all: excellent sword skills, a mature and practical mindset, leadership skills, tactical acumen, and a strong stomach in the face of her comrades dying around her. She'll definitely survive Aincrad, then hunt down those responsible for putting her in there, to begin with.

1 WOULDN'T SURVIVE AINCRAD: Toru Hagakure, The Invisible Girl (My Hero Academia)

The hero student named Toru Hagakure has a rather distinct Quirk. With it, she can bend light and make herself completely invisible at all times, meaning she is a great choice for stealth, espionage, and sabotage. But this won't work in the digital world of Aincrad.

Toru's in-game avatar will be a regular one, and Toru is not used to being seen by her enemies. She would need time to adjust to this new combat paradigm (and train with using swords), and she'll get herself killed before long.
