Falcon and Winter Soldier Embraces the Modern Definition of a 'Hero'

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will not only be a commentary about living up to Captain America's heroism, but also the evolution of heroism itself.

In an extensive cast interview about the show's production with Entertainment Weekly, director Kari Skogland reflected on how the post-coronavirus landscape has changed our understanding of pop culture heroes, something that ties into The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's central themes. "Traditionally, a hero has been painted as being a warrior or a soldier of some kind, and now a hero embraces a whole other layer of responsible citizen, which is first responder, and more so than ever in our today's international story," she said. "Frontline first responders, which is also what Sam is, become very much an integrated part of our exploration of what is a hero."

In addition to being an Avenger and former pararescueman, Sam Wilson was introduced in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as a Department of Veterans Affairs volunteer who helped military veterans overcome their PTSD. While the character's personal life hasn't received much focus in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies, Anthony Mackie teased that both his and Bucky Barnes' downtime will be as much a focus in the show as them going on missions together. "You really get to see [Sam] as just a regular guy," Mackie foreshadowed. "You get to see him sitting at home watching TV, you get to see him in all facets of his personality. I think when you see the two characters together and just how drastically different they are, it works on so many different levels."

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will see Sam and Bucky partner up post-Avengers: Endgame to fight both the Flag-Smashers vigilante group and returning MCU villain Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl). Previews teasers for the show have played up the strained buddy comedy moments between its co-leads due to their differing histories with Steve Rogers. However, it will also tackle the socio-political responsibility faced by Sam as the successor to Captain America's shield, especially with the U.S. government naming John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell) as its official replacement for Captain America himself.

Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. The series premieres March 19 on Disney+.
