WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Snowpiercer Season 2, Episode 6, "Many Miles From Snowpiercer."
Season 2 of Snowpiercer dropped hints that there was more to the story of how the Eternal Engine was stolen from Sean Bean's Wilford. To this point, all that's known is that Melanie (Jennifer Connelly) stole the ark and left Wilford behind in Chicago, risking it all and abandoning her family for the greater good.
However, the full truth has finally come out, and it reveals the heist has a lot more to it than not wanting a party man at the helm.
Mel's at the Breslauer Weather Station in the Rockies trying to gather data and build a climate model using balloons Snowpiercer's 1,034 cars have been sending up across the planet. But after losing her food stash in an avalanche, in the month that passes before pick-up, she's delusional as depression and hunger set in. Mel sees the ghosts of Layton, her daughter Alexandria and Wilford, and they remind her of what she did to get to this point, which is where the audience learns who actually stole the train.
At the departure zone, Wilford's in dictator mode, making it clear he doesn't want anyone taking up extra room. Some poor people, including Layton's camp, are sneaking on as they got word of the exit point, but Mel's worried as she needs her geneticists on board. After some celebrating over what they built, she negotiates with Wilford for the scientists. Unfortunately, he doesn't take everyone she wanted because he gives the spots to Jackboots and people he can party with in the Night Car. And then to make matters worse, he threatens her family and the scientists.
And it isn't a bluff, because with Ben, the driver and Mel next to him, Wilford orders a massacre. His guards shoot the geneticists and their kids in cold blood, and he advises other guards at various points to slaughter dissidents. After the attacks leave Ben petrified, Mel still wants to wait on her family as Wilford steps outside to quell the remaining noise, but he insists they need to make the sacrifice.
Ben's adamant Wilford will destroy the train with this attitude, which guilts Mel into starting Snowpiercer. They speed off, leaving her loved ones behind, and as she tearfully commandeers the engine, Wilford's left on the outside. Wilford then starts to believe Mel was always angling to betray him, but he didn't know Ben was the culprit. This explains why Ben grew close to her, as he knew what she gave up but couldn't risk the boss coming aboard and tanking everything they worked for.
Snowpiercer stars Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Susan Park, Iddo Goldberg, Katie McGuinness, Lena Hall, Annalise Basso, Sam Otto, Roberto Urbina, Sheila Vand and Jaylin Fletcher. The series airs on Mondays at 9pm ET/PT on TNT.
