Star Wars Deserves a Destiny-Style Shooter | CBR

Bungie's Destiny series has offered some of the most entertaining multiplayer battles in modern gaming. Its lore is also incredibly detailed and continues to be expanded upon years after its initial release. The game has also helped usher in a new online era by making a first-person shooter also an RPG. With so many influences that it has borrowed from, maybe now is the time for it to influence another massively popular science fiction franchise.

The Star Wars video game medium is a strange path that includes massive successes, colossal failures and everything in between. It has covered almost every genre and continues to introduce new properties to players. However, it has never tackled a game in the same style as Destiny. This is strange because not only could that be easy, it could potentially even be a surefire hit.

Over the years, Destiny has grown and evolved into what it is now. This has involved many hits and misses and constant tweaking and updates. However, all of its changes have been for the better, and many of its players consider it a success. Star Wars could follow in those footsteps and reach that same success by taking notes from every aspect. Even its traversal, which has a hoverbike called a Sparrow, is essentially a speeder used to take players to various locations across the map.

Destiny also features multiple planets that players can venture to whenever they like. This is the perfect setup for customizable ships and includes both new and classic planets from Star Wars. Some of these planets could include Felucia, Tatooine and Crait. However, the real detail and customization would be fond with the players.

In Destiny, players can choose between three classes, Hunter, Titan and Warlock. Each come with their own set of skills and abilities. This same logic could be applied to a Star Wars game by creating Mandalorian, Mercenary and Jedi classes. Each character would come with their own skills and weapons that could include a lightsaber, beskar staff/dark saber and heavy weapon. Not to mention that the super moves could tie into Force abilities, weapon buffs and so much more. Depending on the era, players could also inflict that damage on anything from Droids to Stormtroopers.

Since all Star Wars media being released fits into the canon, this would make the perfect time to tell a completely original story. That means characters both new and old can interact with a player's fully customizable avatar and help forge a new legend in the Star Wars canon. An original story also means integrating storylines from previous releases in a similar way to other Star Wars games.

Whether taking the form of a human or alien, Jedi or Mandalorian, the multiplayer aspect tied with its already sprawling lore is what makes the game special. Now, friends can join on raids and take on new foes that could easily be translated into a Star Wars title. Classic battles from the shows and films could be used in multiplayer maps, and no matter what, the player would be the hero of their own story. It may be too early for a Destiny-style Star Wars game, but it will be a welcome addition when the time comes.
