The Walking Dead Casts a Major Character for the Show's Final Season

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 10, Episode 17, "Home Sweet Home," which aired Sunday on AMC.

The Walking Dead confirmed that Blood & Treasure's Michael James Shaw will appear as a new character in the 11th and final season of the AMC series.

Shaw will portray Mercer, a popular ex-marine character from The Walking Dead comics, as reported by Deadline. Few details have been revealed about the show's adaptation of Mercer; however, he's known in the comics as a "badass presence with his Mr. T-esque haircut."

Mercer's character debuted in The Walking Dead #177 and is best known for his experience in the United States Marine Corps, which led him to become the leader of the Commonwealth Army. In the comics, he also becomes romantically involved with Juanita Sanchez, aka Princess. Juanita (Paola Lázaro) was introduced in Season 10, Episode 14 of The Walking Dead, when she encountered Stephanie, Eugene, Ezekiel and Yumiko.

"Home Sweet Home", the first episode of The Walking Dead's extended Season 10 premiered on Feb. 28. The episode saw Lauren Cohan's Maggie reuniting with the group following the conclusion of the Whisper War. Maggie also introduced her new "people" -- Elijah and Cole -- to Daryl and Carol and came to terms with Negan's new freedom.

The news of Shaw joining the cast came days after The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang detailed why Jeffrey Dean Morgan's real wife, Hilarie Burton, was cast as Negan's wife Lucille in Season 10. "So, I'll say that the COVID situation and the fact that they are in a pod together, these characters have to do intimate scenes," Kang stated. "It definitely helps just for comfort level, but the conversation about her possibly playing Lucille far predated the start of the pandemic."

In addition to starring as Aiden Shaw in CBS' Blood & Treasure, Shaw appeared as supervillain Corvus Glaive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: End Game. His other television credits include roles in Limitless, Bull, Constantine and Roots.

The Walking Dead stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton and Cooper Andrews. The series airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC and is available to stream early on AMC+.
