Wonder Woman: Why DC's Amazon Uses Her Fortune Better Than Batman

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Sensational Wonder Woman #10, by Amy Chu, Maria Laura Sanapo, Pat Brosseau and Wendy Broome, on sale now.

In the DC Universe, Bruce Wayne does a lot in terms of charity, but there's still a lot he doesn't get right. Gotham City still has assisted living centers, orphanages and neglected neighborhoods that have somehow fallen by the wayside, which even Jason Todd realized when he got to the Hill in Red Hood's recent solo arc.

Honestly, these are problems that should have been erased from Bruce's city when he had his billions before Batman lost his fortune in  "Joker War." Where Batman made those errors with his money, Sensational Wonder Woman #10 proves that Diana of Themyscira is someone who can do philanthropy much more efficiently than him.

This story revolves around Katie, an old woman in the St. Charles Home for the Elderly, where she's clearly a Wonder Woman fang. As she reveals to Alanzo, one of the nicest and most caring orderlies around, and many other people who listen, she's one of Diana's oldest friends, having worked as a journalist in Europe during the Second World War.

They spent many nights out together, bonding and basically becoming best friends. Alanzo, admittedly, wonders if she's exaggerating as he's seen his fair share of senior citizens who are senile or who simply make stuff up in their twilight years. However, as much as he enjoys Katie's tales, the facility's Director Brooks is preparing to kick Katie out, since she has no family or assets.

In the meeting to decide Katie's fate, though, Brooks is told the home's being bought out by a new owner by a lawyer, Hastings. Angrily, she yells at everyone, not realizing the fake lasso she's holding that belongs to Katie really is Diana's Lasso of Truth. The truth comes out with Brooks calling them old fossils, which leads to her being fired as none other than Diana shows up. It's revealed that Wonder Woman bought the home, both to pick up her Lasso and make Alanzo the new head of the facility.

Wonder Woman wants someone with heart and someone she can trust working with the old folks, especially as she considers Katie a sister. It turns out, all the stories are true, with Katie even helping her out in battle against Nazis, and Diana wants to see that Katie is taking care of in her old age.

Alanzo basks in the transformed home, with Brooks booted out months later, it shows that Wonder Woman puts her money to good use, rather than on scientific gadgets, fancy cars, mansions and the other self-aggrandizing signs of wealth. More importantly, she's investing time with these people and visiting them as opposed to just writing big checks or throwing galas to hide her secrets from the world.
