Following years of fan speculation, Zack Snyder's Justice League has finally become a reality, and the DC Extended Universe project seems to feature a much more detailed insight into each character. For example, Ezra Miller's the Flash/Barry Allen was played mostly for laughs in the original film, which ultimately left the character feeling flat. One of the contributing issues to Barry's lack of depth was the compounding deleted scenes that would have given him time to be more than just "the funny guy." However, Zack Snyder's Justice League includes some of those scenes that could give Barry redemption.
A character TV spot released for the film showcased scenes that focused primarily on Barry. This included the long-teased moment where he saves Iris West (Kiersey Clemons) and a new scene that teases Barry's first encounter with the Speed Force. Right off the bat, it is clear that this version of the Flash appears to be more introspective and even ponders the Speed Force's purpose.
Before Snyder left, early trailers for the film featured Barry struggling to make connections with people. Due to his powers, his thoughts also run at superspeed. In turn, he has to slow himself down to match the pace of those around him, making it hard for him to build connections with others. The theatrical cut used this aspect more like a joke, but Zack Snyder's Justice League looks to include it in his story. Moments like when he freezes after saving Iris and runs off highlight his inexperience in talking with strangers.
In the past, Snyder received heavy criticism for some of his choices regarding certain character portrayals, most notably Batman's apparent disregard for his "no-killing" rule in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, time has always seen the characters through to the end, and by the movie's conclusion, Bruce was redeemed and returned to the ideals that fans have come to know. It stands to reason that with time, Barry could also reach his true potential and be taken more seriously by his peers and viewers alike.
Snyder's version of the film promises a big change to how fans view the Justice League and characters like Barry Allen. While it isn't technically canon, this portrayal will be sure to set the character up for a redemption that could affect his future appearances. However, it is unknown if the Flash fans see in the future will have Barry follow the portrayal from the theatrical cut or the one in Zack Snyder's Justice League.
