Ed Brubaker Was Paid More for His Film Cameo Than Creating the Winter Soldier

Renowned comic book writer, Ed Brubaker, who created the Winter Soldier with artist Steve Epting during their run on Captain America in 2005, continues to express his dissatisfaction over how he has been treated, financially, with his famous creation.

Now, while appearing on Kevin Smith and Marc Bernardin's Fatman Beyond podcast, Brubaker had revealed that he has actually been paid more from the Screen Actors Guild residuals for his cameo acting appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (based on Brubaker and Epting's work) than he has been paid for actually creating the Winter Soldier.

Brubaker first expressed his concerns in his newsletter when The Falcon and the Winter Soldier debuted on Disney+, explaining, "And of course, today the Falcon and Winter Soldier show debuts on Disney+, which I sadly have very mixed feelings about. I'm really happy for Sebastian Stan, who I think is both a great guy and the perfect Bucky/Winter Soldier, and I'm glad to see him getting more screen time finally. Also, Anthony Mackie is amazing as the Falcon, and everyone at Marvel Studios that I've ever met (all the way up to Kevin Feige) have been nothing but kind to me... but at the same time, for the most part all Steve Epting and I have gotten for creating the Winter Soldier and his storyline is a 'thanks' here or there, and over the years that's become harder and harder to live with."

Brubaker elaborated on his feelings about the show, explaining, “I remember sitting in that movie and just remembering this Jack Kirby ulcer growing in my stomach going, ‘This is what it felt like, kid.'" and that "When I see ads for the show, it actually makes me feel sick to my stomach.”

Brubaker's frustration lies with his belief that Marvel could easily afford to pay him and Epting more money, “There’s nothing preventing anyone at Marvel from looking over how much the Winter Soldier has been used in all this stuff and calling me and Steve Epting and saying, ‘You know what, we’re going to try to adjust the standard thing so you guys feel good about this.'” Previously, Brubaker had turned down a check for a "Thank You" credit in The Winter Soldier because he felt that the amount was so tiny that it was basically an insult.

Most notably, Brubaker revealed the shocking fact about his acting residuals, “I have made more on SAG residuals than I have made on creating the character for my one line that got cut.”

Created by Malcolm Spellman and directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Erin Kellyman, Adepero Oduye, Florence Kasumba and Daniel Brühl. New episodes debut Fridays on Disney+.
