Batwoman: Wallis Day Teases Kate Kane's Dynamic With Alice | CBR

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for "Initiate Self-Destruct," the latest episode of Batwoman.

Kate Kane has been reborn. In "Initiate Self-Destruct," the latest episode of Batwoman, Roman Sionis hired Dr. Rhyme to change Kate's memories. As a result, Kate believes herself to be Sionis' daughter -- who was, apparently, a patient at Arkham Asylum. With a mask of her own to compliment her "father's," she is now loyal to the False Face Society, so much so that she turned against her own sister Alice and fought Ryan Wilder's Scarlet Knight. However, they may be the only ones who can bring her back to herself.

Speaking to CBR, Kate Kane actor Wallis Day teased her character's future on the series, including a dynamic with Alice that will bring a new side out of both the Kane sisters. She promised Kate and Ryan's relationship will continue to evolve and that it will get "very charged" as the season moves forward. She explained why she "adores" working with Peter Outerbridge, who plays Black Mask, and how acting while wearing a mask offered her more insight into her character. She also teased a reunion with Sophie Moore and more.

CBR: In your debut, Kate spent basically the whole episode in a mask. How challenging was that for you, both from the acting standpoint and the fact you were wearing a mask for probably hours a day?

Wallis Day: The crew was actually amazing. They were taking it off pretty much each different camera set up, which was amazing. But yeah, I was wearing it in between takes, because I wanted the performance to be as authentic as possible. I think it was about taking away the focus of the acting coming from the facial reactions and channeling them into my eyes and my voice, but also my character movement. I had to find other ways to express myself. So it was challenging, but it was actually really insightful and really cool to do.

Fortunately, Kate is related to someone with a penchant for fixing faces. Since Alice seems to be hanging around the Sionis Mansion, what are the odds we might see them put her special talents to work?

I can't say anything about that! I'm sorry.

Tell me a little about your experience working with Peter Outerbridge, who plays Black Mask.

He's so cool! I adore Peter on- and off-screen. We have such a laugh. When he walks into the room, he's just such an energy of light, which counteracts what we're doing, which is great! [laughs] It's what we all need after 14 hours of being in a basement with a mask on my face.

Obviously, Kate and Ryan didn't exactly get off on the right foot. How does their dynamic evolve as Season 2 continues?

Yeah, that does evolve. We actually do see them encounter each other later on as the season goes on, and it's very charged. Let me just say that.

Which character would you say Kate has the most interesting relationship with this season?

Alice!

Why would you say that is?

Yeah, I think the twin dynamics are so fascinating, anyway. And me and Rach[el Skarsten] have just a natural chemistry that is kind of natural for us to just bring to work. Just the dynamics between them are so -- you see both sides of both people in this season, of both twins. I think the theory of having one twin being hero and one twin being a villain, anyway, is so incredible -- such an incredible idea.

But I think now, to see them figure out what on Earth has been happening is -- you see some personality traits shift in order to get their twin back kind of thing, if that makes sense. They sacrifice a lot... I don't think there's any connection as strong as a twin connection, and I think that shows in this season and it's so beautiful and amazing to watch.

Can you tease an upcoming moment or scene that you're particularly excited for fans of the character to see?

Yeah, like I said, there are so many moments; they're all coming to me at once. I think the fans are gonna love when my character... I really don't want to give away a spoiler! Okay, I'm not going to say that one, because I would give too much away. But I think they're going to love seeing Kate back with Sophie and Kate back with her sister.

Batwoman stars Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder, Rachel Skarsten as Alice, Meagan Tandy as Sophie Moore, Camrus Johnson as Luke Fox, Dougray Scott as Jacob Kane, Nicole Kang as Mary Hamilton-Kane and Wallis Day as Kate Kane. Season 2 returns on Sunday, May 2 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
