WARNING: This article contains spoilers for DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 6, Episode 1, "Ground Control to Sara Lance," which aired Sunday on the CW.
Legends of Tomorrow has given audiences the next step in the relationship between co-captains Sara Lance and Ava Sharpe. Upon discovering Sara was missing, the team assembled to try to find out where she had gone off to. After a chat with musical icon David Bowie, they discovered he was there during The Smell's performance that closed off Season 5. Bowie had been recording a video when he ran into Sara, who excitedly told him that she planned on proposing to Ava by the end of the night. However, she was unable to because she was abducted shortly after leaving the bar.
Sara and Ava had a rocky start when they first met. Ava was the stone cold agent of the Time Bureau who hated the Legends because of their chainsaw-like approach towards repairing time. Sara also hated Ava because her uptight attitude got in the way of the Legends. However, during Season 3, Episode 9, "Beebo The God of War," Ava was forced to join the Legends in their mission. This proved to be a good bonding moment for the women who discovered that, despite their differences in leadership, they were both strong-willed and capable in a fight.
They then tried to date as normal people before discovering that they couldn't pretend to be normal. They both had to learn to accept who they were and loved each other despite their oddities. This realization came after Sara had to literally face her demons in the form of Mallus, and Ava had to live with the reality that she was a clone from the future. While these events left them both heartbroken and willing to go through life alone, their relationship helped them deal with their respective revelations and they grew closer because of it. This eventually led to them becoming co-captains of the Waverider in Season 5, after the Bureau was dismantled following the Heyworld event back in Season 4.
Sara Lance had a difficult time finding love. Her affair with Oliver Queen led her onto the Queens Gambit, which was the catalyst for her superheroism. After her time on Lian Yu, she was taken to the League of Assassins where she honed her skills and fell for Nyssa Al Ghul. While Nyssa will forever proclaim Sara as the love of her life, their paths had to diverge, as Nyssa had responsibilities leading the League of Assassins while Sara had to save time itself. Sara spent the next few years having casual encounters, including a one night stand with John Constantine. However, when she got serious with Ava, she started to settle down.
Meeting Ava was the best thing to happen to Sara because she was able to not only be happy in her life, but to be comfortable with herself. Ava knew exactly who Sara was and stayed because she loved her. Alternatively, Sara allowed Ava to keep being herself while also teaching her to have fun every once in a while. The Bowie video even showed how excited Sara was about asking Ava to marry her.
Their love helped save Sara once again when Constantine was able to astral project Ava to Sara's location. With limited time, Ava accepted Sara's proposal and begged her to keep fighting so she could get back to her and they could get married. This gave Sara the push she needed to break through her prison and fight to be with the woman she loves. Ava struggled with Sara being missing, but knowing she is safe has given her hope that she will see her fiancée again.
