WWE superstars Drew McIntyre and Sasha Banks will grace the cover of the upcoming video game WWE 2K22, which is slated for release sometime this year.
A fan vote was held to determine the male superstar and female superstar who would be featured on the cover of WWE 2k22, with the results being announced on the official WWE on FOX Twitter account. "We asked and you overwhelmingly voted [Drew McIntyre and Sasha Banks] as the cover superstars for [WWE2K22]!" the post reads.
The post includes two mock-ups for the cover of the PlayStation 5 version of WWE 2K22, one with a Raw-esque red motif featuring McIntyre and another with a SmackDown-esque blue motif featuring Banks. However, neither the actual game cover. The final version of WWE 2K22's cover will likely feature McIntyre and Banks together, in keeping with 2019's WWE 2K20, which featured both Becky Lynch and Roman Reigns on the cover.
WWE 2K22 will be the first main entry in WWE's flagship video game franchise since WWE 2K20. The planned WWE 2K21 was canceled following various development troubles (presumably related to the COVI-19 pandemic) and negative reception for 2K20. While a mainline WWE 2K game did not hit shelves in 2020, an arcade-style spinoff titled WWE 2K Battlegrounds did release in September of that year.
Hailing from Ayr, Scotland, Drew McIntyre (real name Andrew McLean Galloway IV) began his professional wrestling career in 2001, making his WWE debut in 2007. He was briefly sent to WWE's developmental territory, FCW, before re-debuting on television in 2009. While McIntyre held the WWE Intercontinental Championship and the WWE Tag Team Championship during his first run in the company, he was ultimately released in 2014.
McIntyre returned to the independent circuit and experienced something of a career renaissance, holding titles for such promotions as ICW, Evolve, WCPW and Impact Wrestling. In 2017, McIntyre returned to WWE as a member of the NXT developmental brand, subsequently capturing the NXT Championship. Following his return to the main roster in 2018, McIntyre won tag team gold once again. He then won the 2020 Men's Royal Rumble and went on to win the big one at that year's WrestleMania in March, capturing the WWE Championship for the first time in his career. He won the strap for a second time in November.
Meanwhile, the Fairfield, California-born Sasha Banks (real name Mercedes Justine Kaestner-Varnado) made her pro wrestling debut in 2010, and debuted for NXT in 2012. In 2015, Banks became the third NXT Women's Champion in history, holding the title for 191 days. Following her debut on WWE's main roster, Banks continued to make history, winning the WWE Raw Women's Championship five times, the most in history up until this point. In 2019, Banks and Bayley became the inaugural WWE Women's Tag Team Champions, subsequently winning the belts again in 2020. Banks also appeared in the second season of Disney+'s live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian as the character Koska Reeves, a member of Bo-Katan Kryze's Nite Owls.
