The Suicide Squad's Harley Quinn Is Completely Free of Joker's Influence

The Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie revealed her DC Extended Universe character, Harley Quinn, is no longer beholden to The Joker.

"I think in the first Suicide Squad film she had a certain confidence and cockiness, knowing that she had the protection of the Joker," Robbie said to Toronto Sun. "She was like, 'I’ll go on this mission, and he'll get me out of here in a second'…that was kind of her prerogative on that film. Then in Birds of Prey it was, 'Oh s—, it's a scary, cold world. Maybe I can't do it.'"

"In this film, time has passed," Robbie continued. "It doesn’t directly link to either of those films, but it's not something that Harley is wrestling with anymore. She's not waiting for Mr. J to show up and she’s not wondering if she can do it on her own. She knows."

Robbie first appeared as Harley Quinn in the 2016 movie Suicide Squad before going on to reprise the role in Birds of Prey and the upcoming The Suicide Squad. It is unknown where Robbie's Quinn will appear in the future, though she has said she is working to bring in Poison Ivy, the character's love interest, into potential upcoming projects.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, John Cena as Peacemaker and Steve Agee, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Aug. 6.
