Suicide Squad's Opening Night Audiences Get a Free DC Comic | CBR

The Suicide Squad writer/director James Gunn announced an additional incentive for moviegoers to check out the DC Extended Universe film on its opening nights.

Those who watch The Suicide Squad at one of AMC Theatres' locations on Aug. 5 or 6 will receive an exclusive, free DC comic book tie-in for the film, as Gunn revealed on his Twitter account. The cover art for the comic features the movie's versions of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Savant (Michael Rooker) and the Sylvester Stallone-voiced King Shark.

This promotional offer is also part of Gunn's ongoing attempt to get more people to read and purchase actual comic books, on top of watching comic book movies and TV adaptations. The latest poster for The Suicide Squad similarly encourages fans to buy either physical copies of DC Comics' stories from comic book sellers or digital comic books at DC Universe Infinite. Responding to the film's marketing, comic book artist Mitch Gerads (The Sheriff of Babylon, The Activity) thanked Gunn for helping support the comics industry.

"I was so freaking happy to do that," tweeted Gunn, replying to Gerads. "Post-pandemic I want to support our movie theaters AND our local comics shops AND all the wonderful comic book publishers, writers [and] artists out there." Along with Marvel and DC, Gunn listed Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Fantagraphics Books, IDW Publishing and Oni Press as comics publishers worth checking out.

Like the rest of Warner Bros.' 2021 films, The Suicide Squad will open in theaters the same day it begins streaming on HBO Max for a month. In a bid to inspire more people to see the film in a theater, Gunn recently announced The Suicide Squad will begin early screenings on Thursday, Aug. 5. He also included a note about the date's personal significance, pointing out it "happens to be my birthday."

A quasi-sequel to David Ayer's 2016 film Suicide Squad, Gunn's movie begins streaming on HBO Max on Aug. 6. The Suicide Squad's cast includes a handful of actors from Ayer's DCEU adventure, including Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney and Robbie. However, Jared Leto does not reprise his role as The Joker in the film because Gunn felt the Clown Prince of Crime didn't fit its story.
