Tom Hiddleston Loves the Idea That He's a Loki Variant Himself

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Loki Season 1 finale, "For All Time. Always." now streaming on Disney+.

Loki star Tom Hiddleston has heard a lot of Marvel Cinematic Universe fan theories, especially concerning his character. But his favorite is an appropriately meta one: that he's actually the God of Mischief.

As part of Hiddleston's takeover of Tumblr, renamed Tomblr in his honor, the actor answered a series of fan questions in promotion of the Season 1 finale of his new show. When asked what his favorite theory was that he's heard over the years, he chose one that fits nicely with the themes of the series.

"Somebody did once tell me that they had heard something about -- that they thought that basically Loki was real and living on Earth. And that he was playing a character called Tom Hiddleston," the actor said. "And that he was playing it very well. (Laughs). So yeah, I thought that was -- it's all very meta. And confusing, so you know, maybe I'll be the last to find out."

If the theory holds, then some version of the mythological Loki is real and has taken to creating a persona named Tom Hiddleston in the modern age who plays a version of the trickster. Of course, that would imply that the entirety of the MCU was masterminded by Loki in order to give Hiddleston the role. In that case, Kevin Feige might be a Loki himself. Either way, Hiddleston seems to suggest that if the theory is true, it's so convincing that even he won't know about the deception until it's played out.

Given that Loki offers so many takes on the character and introduces new realities in its finale, it's not hard to imagine Loki Season 2 introducing a "Tom Hiddleston" variant as a nod to this theory and further adding meta wrinkles to the narrative.

The season finale of Loki, "For All Time. Always." premiered yesterday on Disney+ and was swiftly followed by the announcement that the show will return, albeit at an unspecified date. Given the branching timelines and introduction of Kang, however, it's possible that Loki (and his avatar, Tom Hiddleston) could appear in an upcoming MCU project before then.
