The Sims 4: 10 Game Breaking Bugs (That Took Too Long To Get Fixed)

The Sims series is almost as famous for its myriad of glitches as it is for being the go-to life simulator powerhouse. The Sims 4 is no exception, and it's clear that this cycle of bugs and patch notes is just going to keep repeating. At least the upgrade to Python has helped roll out some bug fixes with each update due to the ease of finding flaws, but there are still some bugs that took way too long to get squashed.

The good news is that even if the developers struggle to produce a game with limited bugs, there's a vibrant modding community that will do it for them. Sometimes, they even do it better.

10 How Much Cleaning Was Required In Bust The Dust

When the Bust the Dust pack was initially released, players had to practically spend all day cleaning in order to keep dust at bay. It became so bad that eventually EA had to release a patch for it. Now there are options for it in-game, including the ability to turn off dust spawning entirely.

Unfortunately, turning off this feature takes out pretty much all the content from the pack and leaves players with a bunch of cosmetic vacuums. At least it can be scaled now, so Sims can go out and actually do something other than have a meltdown cleaning.

9 Bunk Beds Were Very Broken

Bunk beds were a highly-anticipated base game addition to Sims 4. The problem was that they started out even more broken than they are now. Sims couldn't use half of the beds, making them essentially obsolete.

The placement of objects underneath the lofted bed is still a pain without switching game modes, and even then it might be worth considering using cheats or downloading custom content instead. At least now both beds can actually be used.

8 The Case Of The Incredible Disappearing Beach Towels

Island Living added a whole slew of great new content, from allowing Sims to get a tan all the way to becoming a mermaid. The problem was that initially, there was a lighting bug where every time a Sim put down a beach towel in hope of getting that perfect tan, the towel would disappear.

Fortunately, the bug was pretty minor and was an easy fix with the next patch. If it keeps happening, though, adjusting lighting settings helps bring the thing back into view.

7 Sims Cooking Just Because

For a while, Sims were even needier than usual. Whenever a Sim would run out of things to do, they would just walk over to the kitchen and start cooking. It didn't matter if they were hungry or not, they would just cook. And cook. And cook.

So if the player was off doing something else and not paying particularly close attention, their Simoleons would be drained by a very bored Sim who would just let it all rot. Then the Sims would act like it was such a big issue that there were dirty dishes everywhere.

6 Non-Interactive Sims Kind Of Killed The Point Of The Game

Just before Seasons debuted, a patch rolled out and made it so some players had Sims who would straight up refuse to interact with one another. Despite the player's best efforts, more outgoing Sims would get terribly lonely no matter what was done to rectify the situation.

Starving a Sim of social interaction is only funny when it's intentional; it's kind of game-breaking when it's not. Eventually the glitch was patched, but it took until the release of the Get Famous expansion months later for it to happen.

5 Only One Plant May Be Watered

During the Seasons update, there was an issue floating around where a Sim would hyper-fixate on only ever watering one of their plants at a time. If the player told them to water plants, they would only water one, maybe two, and continue to do so ad infinitum instead of going to all of the plants.

It was most evident with low-level gardeners, but it was still a persistent issue for some time and required the player to babysit their Sims and physically adjust every plant they were watering.

4 This Leaf Pile Is Not Good Enough

Leaf piles were fun little additions to the game that Sims could interact with in a number of ways. Kids could play in them and particularly feisty adults could share a little bit of intimate time between themselves in the piles. The game didn't care if the leaf piles were burning or not either, leading to some hilarious events.

However, despite having always had the option for sims to WooHoo within one of the piles, it took way too long for that option to actually become implemented. Clicking on the action would do nothing, regardless of the romance meter of the Sims in question. What a tease.

3 Who Needs A Clean Retail Counter?

It was a little bit annoying for some time to own a retail establishment in Sims 4 and keep it clean. The Homely Retail Counter was the worst offender, as it just didn't want to be clean. The only way to do so was to sell the counter and purchase a new one, as no matter what collection of options the player attempted, nobody would clean it.

It didn't matter what was on the counter or not; it would just never get clean — which then made Sims upset about the nearby mess and caused everything to spiral from there. At least now players can make their associates clean counters purely out of spite.

2 Opening Umbrellas Indoors Is Just Asking For Trouble

Seasons added in a lot of new features and therefore also introduced a ton of bugs. Bringing umbrellas indoors and carrying them around was more annoying than anything, but this particular glitch stuck around for way too long.

It would have been fine if only the occasional quirky Sim or maybe a vampire carried umbrellas indoors, but it was everyone. If a Sim had an umbrella and it was raining outside, they would never put the thing away, no matter where they were.

1 Toddlers Were One Buggy Mess

Introducing toddlers into Sims 4 has really brought something awesome to the game. Ignoring the series' issue with the tinier Sims in general, toddlers were a massive buggy mess when they first arrived and it took far too long to fix.

They wouldn't eat and their parents wouldn't take care of them; they existed solely to get taken away due to neglect, no matter what the player did to prevent this. It was obnoxious and entirely pointless to have toddlers. Post-patch, players can enjoy themselves and their little rotten munchkins without fear of neglect.
