During the early seasons of Naruto, Itachi Uchiha was best known as Sasuke Uchiha's older brother, the notorious villain who mercilessly slaughtered his entire clan and served as a member of the Akatsuki terrorist organization. However, as the story continued to unfold, it was revealed that the reasons why Itachi committed these crimes were far from evil intent.
Although his actions were intended to be for the greater good in the end and he certainly wasn't the villain that he portrayed himself as, Itachi definitely went too far in many of the decisions he made and acts he committed.
10 When He Invaded Konoha
After the Konoha Crush, a pre-planned attack orchestrated by Orochimaru and Sunagakure, Uchiha Itachi and Kisame Hoshikagi invaded the Leaf Village in order to kidnap Naruto.
During their unwelcome visit, Itachi and Kisame engaged in a battle with Asuma and Kurenai and almost killed them, but luckily, Kakashi intervened. Although the pair managed to escape, Itachi certainly left a lasting impact on the three Konoha jonin.
9 When He Told Sasuke That He Lacked Hatred
After Itachi and Kisame escaped their altercation with Asuma, Kurenai, and Kakashi, they managed to pinpoint Naruto's whereabouts. During their attempts to abduct him, Sasuke turns up and flies into a rage at the sight of Itachi.
As Sasuke launched a Chidori attack, Itachi stopped him, broke his arm, and then pinned him against the wall. He then proceeded to cruelly tell Sasuke that he was weak because he lacked hatred before putting him under a genjutsu.
8 When He Joined The Akatsuki
The members of the Akatsuki were responsible for the majority of catastrophic events in the Naruto universe. Although each member joined with the idea of making the world a better place through their own ideals, the way they blindly followed orders resulted in the murder of a multitude of people.
Although Itachi joined the Akatsuki as a spy for Konohagakure and to keep his brother safe, he still committed many unforgivable crimes in the process.
7 When He Ignored Sasuke As He Went After Kabuto
After Sasuke crosses paths with a reanimated Itachi, he chases after him in disbelief. Naturally, Sasuke's shaken by the sight of his older brother who he understood to be dead.
Sasuke demanded that Itachi stop and talk to him, but Itachi ignored his request. After some persistence, Itachi tells him that he can't stop because there's something he must do. Although stopping Kabuto was essential, his initial dismissal was unjustified and only caused Sasuke to become even more frustrated than necessary.
6 When He Lost His Temper After He Was Accused Of Killing Shisui Uchiha
After Uchiha Shisui died, some members of the Uchiha clan approached Itachi for answers, suspecting he may have been involved with his death. Understandably, Itachi did not take well to the clan members accusing him of killing his best friend and mentor, so he attacked them as a result. His father tried to intervene, but Itachi continued to lash out and threw a kunai at the Uchiha clan crest.
5 When He Carried The Burden Of Being A Criminal
An ongoing debate in the Naruto fandom is whether Itachi should have carried the painful burden of being the criminal that he chose to portray himself as. Although his actions were arguably for the greater good, many believe he didn't have to go the extremes that he did in order to protect both the Leaf Village and his beloved little brother Sasuke.
4 When He Made Sasuke Watch The Slaughter Of The Uchiha Clan
After Itachi slaughtered the Uchiha clan, a traumatized Sasuke appeared before him. Almost immediately, he put Sasuke under a genjutsu that forced him to watch the entire slaughter of the clan as it happened.
Many of the fandom argue about whether this was necessary, but clearly, Itachi felt this was needed in order to make Sasuke despise him.
3 When He Put Sasuke Under A Genjutsu And "Stole" His Eye
Shortly after the long-awaited fight between the two Uchiha brothers began, Itachi convinced Sasuke that he wanted to steal his eyes, and he put him under a genjutsu that showed him doing so. However, Sasuke was able to show the extent of his strength by breaking out of it.
In reality, though, Itachi was attempting to teach Sasuke more about dojutsu techniques and push him harder in an effort to make him stronger.
2 When He Lied To Sasuke
Sasuke spent the best part of a decade committing his life to revenge because of the ongoing lies Itachi told him. Although Itachi's aim was to protect his little brother, the result of his lies was that Sasuke led an incredibly painful and angry adolescent life.
It could be argued, however, that Sasuke may have decided to pursue revenge regardless of the truth, considering that when Obito finally revealed everything about Itachi, Sasuke chose to continue on his path of revenge — but this time against Konoha.
1 When He Slaughtered The Entire Uchiha Clan
Without a doubt, slaughtering the entire Uchiha Clan was the worst thing Itachi ever did.
Despite being forced into an extremely difficult situation — where he was made to choose between his clan and the safety of the village he loved so dearly — Naruto fans can't help but wonder why Itachi didn't try to push back harder on the village elders' decision or his own father's attempt to organize a coup d'état.
