Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani still can't believe he's part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
"It doesn't feel real to me. You had this big premiere yesterday; for us, our movie's been delayed a year," Nanjiani said in an interview with LA Times. "When you're shooting it, you feel like you're in a Marvel movie, but now it's a little over a year and people are like, 'What's it like being in the MCU?" And I'm like, 'I don't know! I haven't seen the movie. I'm not in the MCU until the movie comes out!"
Nanjiani was interviewed alongside Awkwafina, who stars in the upcoming Marvel film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. "As Nora was saying, [Marvel is] taking a huge chance on people and the kinds of stories they want to tell," he said. "I remember when I was at the premiere for Black Panther and it felt like it was a real cultural moment. It was exciting. It felt like something was happening. I felt the same way when I went to the Crazy Rich Asians premiere. These big moments don’t come very often, and it is exciting that bigger studios are pushing them. I feel excited to be a small part of it."
When asked about the size of his Eternals role, Nanjiani said, "I don't know! Maybe I've been cut out of it. Maybe I'm not a part of it. Maybe this is the closest I get to Marvel, talking to Nora."
Nanjiani will appear in Eternals as Kingo, a skilled swordsman and Bollywood movie star, who, like his fellow Eternals, possesses various cosmic powers including super speed, strength and the ability to fly. Eternals will be the third film in the MCU's Phase Four, following Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Last year, Marvel announced that Eternals would be delayed from its original Feb. 12, 2021 release date to Nov. 5, 2021. However, it was recently reported that the film's release date depends on Shang-Chi's box office performance; if the Simu Liu/Awkwafina led film underperforms upon its Sept. 3 opening, Eternals could move to later in 2021 or beyond. Directed by ChloƩ Zhao from a screenplay by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, Eternals arrives in theaters Nov. 5. Disney CEO Bob Chapek recently confirmed that Eternals will maintain its originally planned fall 2021 release date and will premiere exclusively in theaters, like other upcoming MCU film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
