It would appear that WWE's much-hyped "Summer of Cena" is now over.
"Words cannot describe how appreciative I am that the WWE Universe allowed me the opportunity to return and perform," Cena tweeted. "Thank you staff, superstars, and most of all FANS for giving me an unforgettable summer at 'home' with my 'family'. The journey takes me away now but I’ll C U soon."
Cena's announcement comes just two days after he lost to WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns at SummerSlam in a title bout and was subsequently beaten down by a returning Brock Lesnar. However, while Cena's departure might seem surprising considering he only recently returned, the schedule does line up with what WWE shared in late July, which listed SummerSlam as his last appearance. At this time, it's unclear if he'll still be involved with SmackDown's Sept. 1o show at Madison Square Garden in New York City, as WWE advertised this separately from its Summer of Cena plans.
Cena returned to WWE at June's Money in the Bank to confront Reigns and plant the seeds for their SummerSlam match. Prior to this, Cena had been absent from WWE programming since 2020's WrestleMania 36, where he competed against and lost to Bray Wyatt. In his time away, Cena took part in filming such projects as The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.
"I relate a lot of things to WWE, and this one falls directly in that line," Cena explained shortly before his return. "What was it like to join the WWE locker room? WWE is already a global phenomenon, with or without John Cena and that's proven before I got there and certainly now that I'm not there anymore and they're still thriving… they don't need me. But it's such an honor and a privilege to walk in that locker room and be able to go out and perform."
While Cena is stepping away from the squared circle once more, there'll be no shortage of the multi-time WWE Champion in the coming months. Aug. 27 sees the release of Hulu's Vacation Friends, which stars Cena as a drug-fueled wedding crasher, and the aforementioned Peacemaker is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max in January 2022. He's also headlining director Scott Waugh's Snafu, which is currently in post-production.
