Percy Jackson creator Rick Riordan's recent meeting with Disney+ was very "positive," according to the author, who also serves as the series' co-writer.
"We had a very positive conversation yesterday (Friday, Aug. 20) with the top executives at the various branches of the Disney television organization: Disney Entertainment, Disney TV, 20th Century Studios and Disney+," Riordan wrote on his website. "The good news is: the leadership is 'all in,' as they put it, about making this show and doing it right. A lot of them have kids who have grown up with Percy Jackson, too, so they get it."
Riordan also noted that this was the first time that executives from Disney Entertainment, Disney TV, 20th Century Studios and Disney+ were all in the same Zoom room at the same time, helping them "align our visions" and resolve "a lot of confusion."
However, just as the Disney gods giveth, the Disney gods taketh away. Riordan said that "We still do not have an official green light." However, Riordan and his team did receive "clear marching orders about what the execs need to see from us in order to grant that green light." Riordan emphasized that this should not alarm Camp Half-Blood fans, as this is completely normal and was exactly what he was expecting.
On the production side, "the writers' room has sketched out the first season episode by episode, scene by scene," according to Riordan. The next steps include creature and production design and finishing the scripts, a process that could take months. Location scouting is in the early stages and a deal with a pilot director has nearly been sealed. Casting for the series began back in April.
While Riordan was initially hoping for a 2022 premiere, he now says that a 2023 debut is his best guess. "But this is my own personal estimate and should not be taken as a firm date," he clarified.
Written by Riordan, Percy Jackson & the Olympians is a five-book series that follows the adventures of Percy Jackson, the half-son of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon, as he fights against the forces of the Titan Kronos with his allies from Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods. Throughout the series, he encounters heroes and villains from Greek mythology, including the Minotaur, the Oracle, Atlas, Daedalus, Hades, Zeus and Area, among others.
