Titans Actor Compares Barbara Gordon to Mare of Easttown Character

Savannah Welch revealed her primary source of inspiration for her role as Barbara Gordon in the third season of HBO Max's Titans.

In an interview with W Magazine, Welch spoke about her casting as Gordon in the DC superhero series and went through the steps she took to prepare for the job. "Her character wasn’t a pretty version of a detective," the actor explained. "I think I was watching an interview with her, and she said something about that. Of course, I immediately flashed to Titans, playing a commissioner who is dolled up. I was fighting an uphill battle, trying to play her down, but I don’t know. I don’t think [Barbara Gordon] would give a shit so much about what she looks like. It’s a different world, and it’s a totally different genre of show."

"But it’s a comic book," she continued. "I understand the need to portray a certain image, as well as in a different genre, but I think my intuition and instincts lend to something that’s a bit more in line with what Kate did with her character in [Mare of Easttown].

Being a disabled actor playing a disabled comic book character, Welch recently opened up about how it felt to be represented. In the season premiere, it was revealed that the former Batgirl took up the mantle of Commissioner Gordon after her father passed away. This tragedy is one of many to have hit the Titans version of the Bat-family, with Bruce Wayne's faithful butler also having died.

The first four episodes of Titans Season 3 are available now on HBO Max. Episode 5 will release on Aug. 26.
