The Rookie: John Nolan Uncovered a Russian Spy in LA | CBR

Warning: The Following contains spoilers for The Rookie Season 4, Episode 4, “Red Hot,” which aired Sunday October 17th on ABC.

Last week’s episode of The Rookie featured a sniper hitman case and Wesley being forced to defend him for Elijah. That plot came to a close this week, as Elijah ordered the sniper killed off when the crime lord heard rumors of him flipping. This week, as “Red Hot” opened, John Nolan and his new-old girlfriend, Bailey Nune were sharing old “war stories.” The topic of conversation was whether cops of firefighters were better. Bailey, who is a firefighter, was seemingly winning, but by the end of “Red Hot,” Nolan had a story that trumped anything that Bailey could tell.

With Office Lucy Chen joining Sargent Bradford as his assistant, Nolan was left on patrol by himself. As he was patrolling, he came upon a verbal altercation between two men and a woman. The woman said she had seen someone run from the men’s house, and it looked like trouble. Suspecting domestic abuse, Nolan's guard went up, because something didn’t feel right. However, everyone in Los Angeles was surprised by what he uncovered.

One of the men -- who was way too nice and was obviously trying to get rid of Nolan -- tried to say that the woman was his wife and was running because she was bipolar. Hearing that, Nolan called for an ambulance and a mental health expert, despite the man’s objections, and began to patrol the streets, looking for the fleeing woman. Shortly after, he found her wandering around, and noticed she appeared to have been drugged. The man then rolled up with his friend and tried to take his “wife” back. When Nolan refused, they pulled automatic weapons and opened fire.

Nolan was able to take cover, but the woman fled the scene. When the two men realized that, they also left. Now suspecting some kind of trafficking ring, Nolan searched the house where the men came from with the help of Tim and Lucy. When inside, they discovered that it was actually a Russian safehouse. There were hidden tunnels, an armory, an interrogation room and food stores. Much of it had been destroyed before the men fled, but the CIA and FBI were brought in per protocol. Nevertheless, Nolan and company secretly continued to investigate.

By fingerprinting his cop car, Nolan was able to identify the woman’s alias, which led them to the dead Air Force major that she had been “dating.” With some help from the CIA, they connected the dots and were able to identify the woman as a Russian FSB agent who had gone rouge. The two men had been tasked with taking care of her, but details on why she went rouge were still slim.

When Nolan and Bailey resumed their cop verses firefighter debate, Nolan quickly outdid his girlfriend with the Russian spy story, but it was right then that he broke the case open. He remembered that the woman had something in her hand when he found her, but she didn’t have it when she fled the gunmen. So, he and Bailey went back to search the interior of his car and found a flash drive.

Just then, the Russian spy showed up inside the LAPD, captured Bailey and locked Nolan behind a gate, so that she could retrieve the flash drive. With Bailey as a hostage, things seemed bad, but unknown to Nolan, Bailey was a lieutenant in the army reserves. She disarmed the spy and fought her off long enough for Nolan to escape and reinforcements to arrive. So, as it turned out, Bailey played a big part in Nolan’s spy story, thus extending the debate over cops verses firefighters.

To see what Nolan and the rest of the LAPD do next, tune into the Rookie. New episodes premiere Sundays at 10pm ET, on ABC.
