Batwoman Revealed Marquis' Connection to The Joker | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batwoman Season 3, Episode 5, "A Lesson From Professor Pyg," which aired Wednesday, Nov. 10 on The CW.

Despite the fact that the Arrowverse's Joker has been confirmed to be dead, the effects of his madness continue to be felt across Batwoman's Gotham City. In particular, the show's latest episode reveals that Ryan Wilder's brother Marquis has an intensely personal connection to the Crown Prince of Crime, which has drastically affected his sanity despite his mother's best efforts.

Throughout Batwoman Season 3, Ryan has had some tense interactions with Marquis. While he is the Executive Vice President of Jeturian, Marquis has frequently gone out of his way to help Ryan, seemingly as a purposeful way to undercut their mother. Episode 4 of the season only raised more questions around Marquis, as it was revealed that Jada is working with Black Glove to find a way to freeze her son.

During "A Lesson From Professor Pyg," Marquis crashes a dinner between Ryan and Jada in order to stir up family drama, but they are all drugged and attacked by Professor Pyg. Marquis passes out and begins to seize, forcing Ryan to risk Pyg's wrath to retrieve some insulin for her brother. Ryan manages to get the insulin to him and Jada, and Marquis attacks Professor Pyg, brutally stabbing him to death.

After the police have cleaned up the crime scene, Marquis goes home while Ryan and Jada talk. Jada tells Ryan that Marquis was attacked by the Joker as a child, and his brain was damaged by the villain's joy buzzer. As a result, Marquis began to develop sociopathic tendencies, which only grew worse as he got older. Jada confesses to Ryan that she was trying to find a way to freeze Marquis until she found a cure for him.

Back at the Batcave, Ryan watches various home videos that display Marquis' aggression and sociopathy. The videos include footage of Marquis burning an ant colony with a magnifying glass and throwing things at his mother, but the most disturbing video shows him intentionally giving his father an intense allergic reaction, recording as he watches him choke.

Meanwhile, Marquis arrives home and looks at his bloodied hands in the mirror. While at first seeming horrified, he then uses the blood to paint a frown on his face. This seems to be a twisted reflection of the Joker's trademark smile, indicating that the madman still lives on within Marquis' head. Considering Season 3 has been confirmed to feature several new versions of iconic Bat-villains, there is a very terrifying possibility that Marquis could end up following the Clown Prince of Crime's road to madness.
