EXCLUSIVE: Eternals Director Chloé Zhao on IMAX Filming Experience

Eternals director Chloé Zhao discussed her experience using IMAX to film the next Marvel Studios blockbuster.

"I think IMAX feels like a natural progression for me as a filmmaker because I'm always looking for, whether it's a big movie or it's a small independent film, this juxtaposition between scale and intimacy," Zhao explained in a video provided exclusively to CBR. "So, when we set out to make Eternals, the word 'immersion' was everything, because we had to make audiences believe. I remember when I went to pitch it, I summed it up with the opening line of a William Blake poem, 'To see a World in a Grain of Sand. And a Heaven in a Wild Flower. Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand. And Eternity in an hour.' What Blake is saying in that poem is that you can understand and find the endless beauty of the cosmos and the meanings within the smallest things on Earth, and that's what we were setting out to capture."

Eternals centers on Marvel's race of immortal beings created by Jack Kirby. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Eternals are brought out of millennia of hiding following the events of Avengers: Endgame and the reemergence of the evil Deviants.

The film boasts a sprawling cast consisting of 10 core heroes, as well as Dane Whitman, who may or may not follow his comic book counterpart in becoming Black Knight. However, Zhao recently explained that Marvel originally wanted an even larger team. "There was 12 characters when I first read it; 12 Eternals. We had to let two go along the way," she said. "Some characters don’t need the most screen time, it’s about what they do with the screen time. They have to be memorable. And when we looked at these 10 unique individuals, we thought about how they represent 10 aspects of human nature. They’ve been here for so long, who they become today is a big part of who we are. And so it was actually equally important that they remain memorable. All 10 of them had the same weight; not necessarily screen time, but the weight."

Eternals arrives in theaters Nov. 5.
