New Godzilla vs. Hedorah Short Film Premieres Online | CBR

The short movie Godzilla Vs. Hedorah is now available online.

The five-minute monster brawl was uploaded to the official Godzilla YouTube channel on Nov. 3, shortly after its debut at this year's Godzilla Fest, a yearly celebration of all things 'Zilla related. The short film was directed by Kazuhiro Nakagawa and was shot over the course of three days at Toho Studios, where many of the classic Godzilla movies were produced and filmed. The movie reuses the Godzilla and Hedorah suits that were last seen in 2004's Godzilla Final Wars, a movie that was created to mark the 50th anniversary of the franchise. Similarly, Nakagawa's short was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of Godzilla vs. The Smoke Monster, which was originally released in 1971.

In the original film, Hedorah was an alien from the Dark Gas Nebula, who was attracted to the Earth to feed on its excessive air pollution. While the monster was easily defeated by Godzilla in its original form, Earth's pollution eventually causes it to evolve into a massive sludge monster, which nearly succeeds in defeating the King of the Monsters. Similar to the original movie, Godzilla defeats Hedorah in the new short by electrocuting the beast first on some conveniently placed power lines and then finishing it off with a blast of atomic breath.

The original Gojira movie was released on Nov. 3, 1954, so Toho has declared Nov. 3 to be "Godzilla Day" in Japan.  Fans in the United States can celebrate the holiday at their nearest Alamo Draft House location, as the chain is hosting the premiere of a new 4K remaster of the original Godzilla movie in its theaters. Certain locations will also host screenings of some of the more beloved entries in the long-running kaiju franchise, including 1984's The Return of Godzilla and 1989's Godzilla Vs. Biollante, two movies which have previously never been officially screened in theaters within the United States. Of course, Godzilla Vs. The Smoke Monster will also be screened at these locations.

Some Alamo Draft House theaters will also screen 2016's Shin Godzilla, the critically acclaimed reboot of the series that was directed by Shinji Higuchi and Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno. The movie was the highest grossing film in Japan in 2016 and the highest grossing movie in the franchise's almost 70-year long history, and was praised by critics for its dramatic reimagining of the monster and its political and societal commentary.
