Pokémon: 10 Creepy Pokémon That Are Not Ghost-Type | CBR

Pokémon may seem quite family-friendly on the surface but it is not always a sweet little series with only the cutest things to appeal to a neverending crowd of small children. Sometimes, the games can get downright horrifying, especially once players start really paying attention to the Pokédex entries.

It's common knowledge that ghost-types rule the creepy category, but they aren't the only ones who have some unsettling lore. The world of Pokémon is full of creepy events, history, places, and creatures that fly under the radar due to the cute and whimsical nature of the series.

10 Tyranitar Is An Invincible Terraformer

A Tyranitar, according to its Sword and Shield Pokédex entries, has a body that is completely invincible. Therefore, it often picks out fights knowing that it can't actually get hurt. It's so powerful that it is capable of destroying entire mountains and terraforming entire regions.

Yet somehow this monster isn't even a pseudo-legendary. It's things like that which have some fans speculating that the Pokédex contains more along the lines of myths than scientific fact, but either way. Tyranitar is definitely not a creature to mess around with. There is something unsettling about that level of power.

9 Sliggoo Cares Only For Food

Sliggoo is a creature that is absolutely adorable and evolves into the massively useful Goodra which is definitely a fan favorite. Before it gets to this stage of evolution, one of the stages it passes through necessitates that it is a creepy blind little slug for a period of time that has no concept of what is and is not food.

It even tries to coat friends in a goo that will help them dissolve their prey and slurp them up. It has no idea what is a friend and what is food, so their trainers are even in danger just by keeping one around.

8 Kadabra Was Once A Human Child

Starting in Emerald, the Pokédex occasionally mentions that a boy who had psychic powers one day woke up as a Kadabra. Not only that, but it emits such strong alpha particles that it causes precision machines to malfunction. So anything like a clock or a pacemaker could fritz just because it's nearby.

Seeing a shadow on televisions and other devices that happens when one is nearby is considered bad luck too, so these things are a whole world of trouble. So not only was this thing rumored to have initially been a child who couldn't control their psychic powers, but it also is extremely dangerous to be around.

7 Grimer Creates New Poisons By Combining With Other Grimer

Grimer is one exceptionally terrifying little ball of sludge. These things can fit into even the smallest of crevices to consume toxic waste and chemicals. Little bits that come off of it turn into more Grimer. It is so toxic that nothing can ever grow where it has been ever again.

If that wasn't bad enough, Grimer also has the ability to create entirely new, horrifying toxins when they combine. These things are extremely dangerous, and that alone is absolutely horrifying.

6 Hypno Kidnaps People Who Are Having Good Dreams

Hypno is really far creepier than it needs to be. This strange humanoid monster uses its pendulum to put other creatures to sleep— and not just Pokémon. After that point, it feeds on their dreams just like its predecessor Drowzee, but with one extra little freaky addition. If the sleeper is having a good dream, it steals them away.

It's notorious for stealing away children and even sometimes impersonating people in order to get closer to things. In one of the games, it is sitting there in the front of a store and speaking, so when it's revealed to be a Hypno it just added another bit of unease about the thing.

5 Porygon-Z Is A Glitchy AI

The whole Porygon line is terrifying, but none more so than Porygon-Z. The whole line is artificial Pokémon that were made to be living computers. They are then upgraded and eventually infected with a horrible virus which turns it into this glitchy mess.

The program used to create it was intentionally made to allow it to travel through alien dimensions and facilitate extra-dimensional activities so it's meant to be extra powerful. However, it is corrupted and lives in a constant state of instability. If that's not creepy enough, the item it needs to be given and then traded with is called a Dubious Disc, which gives even more insight into the real intentions behind the programming.

4 Ditto Can Be Literally Anything

Ditto is thought to be a result of experimentation to create or clone a Mew. It's pink, one of the only things capable of learning transform, and initially shows up outside of a laboratory. That's not what is terrifying about it though.

This gooey pink blob can transform into literally anything. Not just other Pokémon, but objects and even people. Most of the time this is signified by giving the things Ditto's face, but it's also hinted in the Alola games that unless it tries to speak, it is nearly impossible to really tell. That's downright terrifying.

3 Gardevoir Can Get So Emotional It Opens Entire Black Holes

Gardevoir is the Pokémon of emotions. It is said that the red horn in its chest allows the creature to sense the emotions of those around it. Being such an empathic creature, it stands to reason it bonds very closely to its trainer.

So much so that if it perceives that they become threatened, they open up a black hole in order to attempt to protect them. Clearly, that can't happen based on real-world physics otherwise the whole place would be destroyed in an instant, but the point stands. It is so willing to go to extremes for those it cares about it will willingly destroy anything it perceives as a threat to them.

2 Spoink Will Die If It Ever Stops Bouncing

Spoink is adorable, just about everyone can agree with that. Their animation can get a little sickening with all of the bouncing and their stats are not that impressive, but that's not enough to make them creepy.

Their Pokédex entry explains that they absolutely must keep bouncing at all times— even when they are asleep— or else their heart will stop beating. That means every time they faint in battle, they effectively die.

1 Parasect Is Based On A Real-Life Parasitic Fungus

Parasect might not look all that creepy. It's a crab-type creature with a big mushroom on its back, and actually has a nice shiny form where the mushroom goes golden.

The thing that really makes Parasect absolutely horrifying is that it is based on a real-life phenomenon. Ophiocordyceps unilateralis is an insect-pathogenic fungus that bores itself into an insect— usually an ant— and essentially turns it into a zombie. The bug starts behaving awkwardly in order to spread the spores and grow the fungus. And with Parasect's multitude of spore moves, there's no doubt whether or not this thing does the same.
