A new season of Pokémon Unite has just launched with a new summer-themed battle pass titled "Sun, Sun, Sunshine." The battle pass comes packed with new skins, most notably those for Venusaur and Charizard, which see the latter wearing cute rounded reading glasses.
As revealed by Pokémon UK, "Sun, Sun, Sunshine" introduces Holowear Sunshine Style: Venusaur and Adept-Style: Charizard. The Sunshine Style: Venusaur skin has the Pokémon wearing a bright red and gold paisley cloth that covers the leaves at the base of their flower. Along with this new skin comes unique Venusaur animations involving their flower. The Adept-Style: Charizard skin has the Pokémon not only wearing glasses but a sophisticated black jacket. It has not been confirmed whether this skin comes with any special Charizard-specific animations. This season’s pass also includes new Pokémon Trainer outfits fit for the summer theme, such as Hawaiian shirts and shorts, summer dresses, sandals and even summer accessories like sunglasses.
Pokémon Unite’s battle pass structure is much like other online multiplayer battle arena types that can be bought by either using real money or earning in-game currency. The battle pass is split in two, giving players the option to buy either the Premium Pass or the Premium Pass Plus. The Premium Pass costs 490 gems, while the Premium Pass Plus is 890 gems, which are around $5 USD and $8 USD, respectively.
Unfortunately, the Holowear Charizard and Venusaur skins are only available to those who purchase the Premium Pass Plus. While many may jump to the pay-to-win debate often linked to microtransactions in games, Holowear adds nothing but a new style, possible Pokémon-unique in-game animations and sometimes fixes to bad designs. Other Holowear skins are available in-game at the Zicro Trading Hub.
The second season not only brings new Pokémon and trainer outfits but rewards for those who played Pokémon Unite in Season 1. Those who still have Beginner Rank will receive 2,000 Aeos tickets, with each rank level reward increasing slightly. Those who reached Master Rank will receive a whopping 20,000 Aeos tickets.
Pokémon Unite’s second season comes just on the heels of a successful first season, which ended with the game's popular Halloween event. The new season also comes after an in-game survey that suggested major changes to the popular MOBA.
