No Way Home is the follow-up to Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man reboot, which began in 2017 with Homecoming after Tom Holland's Peter Parker debuted the year prior in Captain America: Civil WarHomecoming saw Spidey battle Adrian Toomes/The Vulture, while the 2019 sequel Far From Home pitted the web-slinger against Quentin Beck/Mysterio. That film ended with Mysterio revealing Spider-Man's secret identity to the world.

Given the events of Far From HomeNo Way Home will see Peter recruit Doctor Strange to wipe the minds of those who learned his secret. When he interferes with the spell, though, he causes even more trouble in the already unstable multiverse. This is what will seemingly bring characters from past Spider-Man films like Alfred Molina's Dr. Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus, Jamie Foxx's Max Dillon/Electro and Willem Dafoe's Norman Osborn/Green Goblin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's also expected that former Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will factor into No Way Home, though neither Marvel nor Sony will confirm these long-standing reports.

"What people will be really surprised about is that it's not fun, this film," Holland recently said while discussing No Way Home. "It's dark and it's sad, and it's going to be really affecting. You're going to see characters that you love go through things that you would never wish for them to go through. And I was just really excited to kind of lean into that side of Peter Parker. Peter Parker is always someone who's looking up. He's always really positive. He's always like, 'I can fix this. I can do this.' Whereas in this film, he feels like he's met his match. He's like, 'I don't know what to do.' That was an aspect of the character that I'd never seen before, and I was really, really excited to try to tackle."

Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in theaters Dec. 17.
