The series will be adapted from the beloved children's fantasy book series The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. The story follows the Grace family, twins Jared and Simon and their older sister Mallory, as they discover a field guide to various magical creatures living in the forest around their new home. The overarching story consists of five books while a variety of spin-offs were subsequently released to build on the novels' world.

This isn't the first time The Spiderwick Chronicles has been adapted. In 2008, the first book in the series was brought to the big screen in 2008 as a collaborative project between Paramount Productions and Nickelodeon Movies. The film starred Freddie Highmore, Sarah Bolger, Mary-Louise Parker, Seth Rogen, Martin Short and Nick Nolte. It received generally favorable reviews, with many critics praising Highmore's performance alongside the movies' captivating and imaginative world. The Spiderwick Chronicles movie was also adapted into a video game for PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and PC.
