In late February, the fast-approaching Mortal Kombat film reboot made history, with its first official trailer amassing over 116 million views in one week to become the most-viewed red band trailer of all time. Writer-director James Gunn's upcoming DC Extended Universe reboot The Suicide Squad has now broken that record.
Since its release one week ago, The Suicide Squad's red band trailer has amassed over 150 million views worldwide. "I'm incredibly grateful to all of you for making this happen!" Gunn wrote on Twitter upon hearing the news. "Thank you!"
The Suicide Squad is an R-rated reboot of director David Ayer's 2016, PG-13-rated film Suicide Squad. Gunn's film features a number of returning cast members from Ayer's, though also introduces an array of new faces to the DCEU. It will release in theaters and on HBO Max on Aug. 6. A spinoff series starring the character Peacemaker is also currently in production for HBO Max and is expected to premiere in early 2022.
Meanwhile, director Simon McQuoid's Mortal Kombat is based on the popular video game series of the same name. It is the first theatrically-released, live-action Mortal Kombat movie since 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which was itself a sequel to 1995's Mortal Kombat. The film is set to hit theaters and HBO Max on April 23, having been pushed back from its previous release date of April 16.
Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson "Jax" Bridges, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young and Laura Brent as Allison Young. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max April 23.
